Coffee shop worker squabbles with customer over 1 penny: 'The entitlement of these people'

This customer had a rather frustrating experience while they were just trying to buy a cup of coffee. 

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that the price of everything is going up, and that includes your morning cup of coffee. Finding a great coffee spot is such a blessing: some places have cheap drinks that taste amazing, while others have quick service, and some have decor that makes you want to stay all day and enjoy the atmosphere. 

If you're lucky, you'll find that perfect coffee shop that has all of these things. Oh, and there's one other element that can really make or break your experience: the way the baristas act. Even if you find the coffee spot of your dreams, if the staffers are screaming at each other all the time, it can really spoil the mood. Other baristas can be kind of sassy and act like you're ruining their afternoon when you request a drink from them. Then, there are people like this woman, who acted in a totally unacceptable way towards a guest who just wanted a large coffee.     Left my card at home, but had $7 cash on me so I went to the coffee shop... . . . picked my drink and asked the cashier what was the largest size I could buy with $7. "A venti is $7.01, so I can only do a grande." (Yes, this was the total after taxes were added.)

    There was a take a penny leave a penny right between the two of us, so I told her I'd use one and ordered the venti. She rang up a grande. I tried to correct her, multiple times, to no avail of course.

    I'd put any amount of money on betting that she assumed I'd toss the change from the smaller drink in the tip jar. I was already having quite the day so this ordeal was just the icing on the sh cake. I just didn't have it in me to argue anymore so I pocketed my change, which awarded me a attitude while she walked off to make the drink.

    I've been a barista (a real one, who actually grinds the espresso and packs and pours shots rather than just pushing a button). 13 years of perfecting coffee making and customer service. And if someone had come in, was a penny short and there was a tray of coins literally alloted for this exact situation, they'd be getting large that they the ordered.

    Wouldn't it be better to impress someone with their beverage so that they become a regular? Regulars usually tip their baristas (I mean, why wouldn't you tip the person who makes your drink every single day?). Instead of making a regular who might tip a dollar or 2 per drink, they made a nemesis.

    UnownJWild You said it best. They only see you as "a potential dollar sign". All the more reason not to tip. The entitlement on these people is beyond insanity.

    Maybe next time, this person could order on the app while staring the barista in the eyes, just to let them know that they should get exactly what they ordered in the first place.

    Imguran Hope next time you take a card and hold it while ordering a venti from her, then when it's time to pay, give exactly $7 and a penny in cash. Egads, even the $7 looks expensive. For a coffee?
